In the midst of the MLB's shutdown due to Corona Virus prevention, Astros' starter Justin Verlander has undergone other medical procedures. The team announced Tuesday the 37-year-old underwent surgery on his right groin and is set to miss six weeks for recovery.

Verlander was originally shutdown March 9 for a "mild lat strain" according to Astros' interim GM James Click. The groin surgery is unrelated to the original ailment. He was not able to throw his first spring training start with the strain and now the suspension of spring training.

The six week schedule for his recovery would now put him in line to be ready for the new delayed opening day following the CDC's recommendation. The original belief within the Astros was that Verlander would not be ready for the March 26 opening day.

Verlander won the Cy Young Award in 2019 going 21-6 with a 2.58 ERA and 300 strikeouts. He is entering his 16th season in the majors, coming off of the World Series loss to the Nationals last season.
