Less than two months after being behind the bench as an Assistant Coach for Germany at the 2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship, Jessica Campbell has made history in the American Hockey League.

The Coachella Valley Firebirds, who are the AHL affiliate of the Seattle Kraken, announced on Tuesday that they've hired Jessica Campbell as their first Assistant Coach in franchise history. The Firebirds are set for their inaugural season in October and have already named Stanley Cup-winning Head Coach Dan Bylsma as their bench boss.

"I'm very excited, it feels like it's going to be a really good fit," Campbell said. "I am thrilled to join the Kraken organization. Everybody's been so fantastic through the process."

Campbell, 30, now becomes the first female coach in American Hockey League history. She started the 2021-22 season in the DEL with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers as a Skills Coach, before being promoted to Assistant Coach during the year.

"We talked about coaching, he was asking about my approach," Campbell said. "He clearly did his research, connecting with people at the world championships and guys I have coached. After a couple of interviews with Dan, I interviewed with Ron [Francis]."

As a player, Campbell represented Canada on a couple of occasions, including the 2015 IIHF Women's World Championship, winning the silver medal. At the club level, she spent three years in the now-defunct CWHL, before taking a couple seasons off and then playing with Malmo's women's team in Sweden during the 2019-20 campaign.
