Manny Malhotra's first training camp decision might be benching Elias Pettersson as the Canucks' top centre.

This week, reports framed Vancouver's opening camp battle at centre as a genuine question between Pettersson and Marco Rossi.

The Canucks would obviously prefer Pettersson erasing doubts about being a true first-line centre, but last season didn't make that case for him. This season, everything might change.

From March 1 onward, Rossi's 11 even-strength points tied Brock Boeser for the team lead. Pettersson managed just 5 over that same stretch, tied for tenth on the roster.

To be fair, Pettersson often played the league's toughest matchups. But in actual offensive zone chances, he simply didn't look as engaged as Rossi did.

Pettersson finished last season with 51 points over 74 games at a minus-30 rating, numbers that explain exactly why this battle exists in the first place.

Boeser, for reference, put up 48 points of his own over 75 games, finishing at a rough minus-48 rating on a Vancouver roster that struggled across the board.

Why Rossi has real momentum heading into camp

Rossi put up 35 points over just 50 games last season, including 12 goals and 23 assists, at a minus-26 rating on a rebuilding roster.

He's also been described as battle-tested in Vancouver's room already, the kind of internal credibility that matters once camp decisions actually get made.

If Pettersson wants to keep the job, he likely needs a strong first impression on Malhotra early, because Rossi looks ready to get first crack otherwise.

Handing this job to Rossi outright would be the right call based on recent form alone. Pettersson still has to prove it, not just be assumed into the role.

Pettersson still carries an $11,600,000 cap hit, the kind of number that puts real pressure on this specific battle beyond just training camp optics.

Whoever wins that centre job shapes how the rest of Vancouver's forward group gets built out for a season that's already carrying plenty of uncertainty.
