The Edmonton Oilers have officially put Connor McDavid on the injured reserve. The Oilers captain was injured in last Saturday's game against the Nashville Predators after falling awkwardly into the boards. Despite the initial update after the game sounding promising for McDavid, it came out two days later that he would miss 2-3 weeks with a quad injury.

McDavid has been his usual dominant self this season, putting up a phenomenal 81 points in just 55 games. Largely in part to his and Leon Draisaitl's play, a playoff spot looks like a strong possibility at this point. As of today, they currently sit second in the Pacific Division with 66 points despite playing in just 57 games. If they are able to stay afloat during McDavid's absence, they have a very strong chance to make the playoffs for just the second time in the past 14 seasons.

Putting McDavid on the injured reserve changes nothing regarding his 2-3-week timetable. This move simply gives the Oilers an extra roster spot. Shortly after McDavid was moved to the injured reserve, the club announced that Marcus Granlund is being recalled from the Bakersfield Condors. Granlund, 26, signed with the Oilers this past offseason and played the first 31 games of the year with the team. However, after struggling to put up numbers with just three goals and four points, he was demoted to the AHL. In 15 AHL games Granlund has amassed 15 points.
