The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced on Monday that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews has been suspended two games for cross-checking Buffalo Sabres defenceman Rasmus Dahlin.

The incident occurred during the third period of Sunday afternoon's Heritage Classic. Dahlin initially cross-checks Matthews, before pair engage in a brief shoving match. Matthews then gets up and cross-checks Dahlin in the neck area. Both Matthews and Dahlin received two minutes for cross-checking on the play.

Matthews, a native of Scottsdale (Arizona), scored his NHL-leading 45th goal of the season on Sunday afternoon, but the Maple Leafs fell to the Sabres by a score of 5-2.

The 24-year-old will now miss Tuesday's game against the Dallas Stars and Thursday's tilt with the Carolina Hurricanes. He'll be eligible to return to the line-up on Saturday against the Nashville Predators.
