Hjalmarsson out long term
Niklas Hjalmarsson, veteran defensemen for the Arizona Coyotes, left Saturday's loss to the Avalanche early after blocking a slap shot from Colorado's Erik Johnson. Hjalmarsson left the ice visibly in pain, and was seen leaving the Pepsi Center on crutches. A later diagnosis from medical experts would reveal the Coyotes alternate captain to be suffering from a cracked fibula. As it stands, Hjalmarsson will be out for roughly 3 months.
Head coach Rick Tocchet was quoted post game regarding the veterans injury; “This is a big loss for us. Nik is a good defensemen. We're going to miss Nik if he's out for a bit.”
Hjalmarsson is in his third season with the Coyotes, playing all 82 games last year, but managing only 48 games during the 2017-18 season. In his time with Arizona, the defensemen has netted 20 points (2 G 18 A.) He's also notably solid regarding his blue line coverage.
As of Monday morning, the Coyotes have called up defensive prospect Kyle Capobianco from the Tuscon Roadrunners, while placing Hjalmarsson on injured reserve.
His return is expected sometime in January.
