The Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL are believed to have made history by hiring the league's first female coach. Olivia Howe, who is from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan will serve as the team's assistant coach this season after acting as a guest coach during training camp. The Western Hockey League has no records of a female ever serving on the coaching staff of any team in the organization.

"It's been really surprising the feedback and reaction I've got," Howe told Sportsnet. "I'm really excited to start here. It's a great opportunity. Being from Moose Jaw, it's just awesome."

Howe played in the NCAA from 2012 to 2016 with Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. She won a championship with the team in 2014. She is also a graduate of the Notre Dame Hounds program in Saskatchewan and helped the Hounds win the Esso Cup national championship in 2011.

"It's great to have another perspective in the dressing room and in the coach's office — a female that's played at the highest level in the NCAA and won a national championship," said Warriors head coach Tim Hunter.

Howe, 25, said there will be a bit of a learning curve as she gets used to the style of hockey played by men.

"It's definitely a lot different coming from the female game, so (there's) a lot to learn," she said. "Different styles of play. The way the women play the game, obviously, no checking and whatnot. There's a bunch of factors that add into this. It's going to be really exciting to learn a lot with the team."
