Ontario's situation with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is getting worse and worse by the day, and that is not good for professional sports. TSN's Rick Westhead spoke to infectious disease Dr. Andrew Morris about pro sport events and the Omicron variant.
The cases in Ontario are doubling every 2-3 days, and he estimates ten thousand daily cases by December 31. He also predicts that the Ontario government will soon have to close NHL and NBA games to fans. He also stated that " The government has no choice.»
Apparently the background for 10,000 daily cases is due to the fact that the worst time for Ontario to this point was 4,000 daily cases in the third COVID-19 wave, but now there is less healthcare capacity due to attrition. Along with this, Kingston, Ontario has filled 72 of 90 ICU beds, but patients are being sent out because of the lack of trained staff.
Hopefully the COVID-19 Omicron variant will be able to get under control before decisions like this have to be made. Of course all fans want to go to the games, but it seems that it may not be as likely within the next month or two.
Context for potential 10K daily cases: Worst time for Ontario to this point was 4K+ daily cases in 3rd Covid-19 wave. Difference now?
Less healthcare capacity b/c of attrition.
