Fox agreed to terms on a 7-year deal on Monday evening, worth in the neighborhood of $66.5M. The AAV is expected to come in somewhere around the $9.5M mark - right in the wheelhouse of the deals that Seth Jones, Darnell Nurse and Dougie Hamilton had signed earlier this year.
Fox was originally drafted in the 3rd round, 66th overall, by the Calgary Flames back in 2016, but was dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes along with Dougie Hamilton and Michael Ferland in the deal that sent defenseman Noah Hanafin and forward Elias Lindholm.
The Jericho, NY native is off to another hot start this season, amassing 2 goals and 7 assists for 9 points through the Rangers' first 9 games of the season.
While many of the recent deals for top defensemen may be perceived as overpays, I don't believe this deal will be one that qualifies. Fox appears to be the real deal and if he can replicate the type of production that he enjoyed last season, we could be looking at the league's next top defenseman each and every year.
Fox's deal is reportedly the richest deal for a defenseman coming out of an ELC in league history.
