Gavin McKenna just told the Maple Leafs' locker room that slow starts are on every player, himself included, and he put a name on the problem: energy.

The timing matters. Toronto lost 4-2 to the Canadiens on Saturday night, and the 18-year-old has been at the center of the conversation all week.

McKenna's message was simple. "Might just be an energy thing," he said. "Tough schedule, but at the end of the day, that's the NHL. Each guy in this room has got to hold themselves accountable to being prepared."

He didn't exempt himself. "Even me being a young guy, I can try to influence that a little bit, have better starts to games, and hopefully that can snowball to my teammates."

Look at the week he's had. On Wednesday, Jim Hiller's blunt comments on McKenna after the Utah loss put his third period under the microscope.

Two days later, the first overall pick of the 2026 draft was moved off the top power-play unit, with John Tavares back on it at practice.

Why a rookie's accountability speech lands in Toronto

Plenty of players would have kept their head down after that. McKenna answered the demotion head on, as we saw in his response to the power-play change, and now he's taking on the room's energy too.

Against Montreal, he scored and put 4 shots on goal in 15:52 of ice time. He still finished a -1 in a loss, which is the kind of night that makes his message harder to ignore.

It's also a risky message. A teenage rookie talking about preparation puts the veterans on notice, and the next slow start will be judged against his words. Calling for better starts is easy. Delivering them every night of a tough schedule is where a room finds out who is listening.

Toronto plays New Jersey on Sunday, and the first period will show whether the snowball McKenna described has started rolling.

Quick hits

DETROIT RED WINGS: Moritz Seider dropped the gloves with Avalanche captain Gabe Landeskog on Saturday night. It was the lone bright spot in a 4-0 loss in Colorado, and the fight at least showed some life.

LOS ANGELES KINGS: Peter Laviolette's timeout couldn't fix a sleepy start in Los Angeles, and the Kings fell 5-2 to the Penguins. When a timeout is your best tool that early, you have bigger problems.

COLORADO AVALANCHE: Mackenzie Blackwood stopped all 27 shots in a 4-0 win over the Red Wings. The shutout moves him into a tie for sixth on the franchise list, passing Fiset.

MINNESOTA WILD: Nikita Kucherov's overtime goal gave the Lightning a 4-3 win in Minnesota. The Wild had a two-goal lead in hand and let it slip away, which will sting for a while.

EDMONTON OILERS: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins went to the dressing room early in the second period after taking a puck up high. The Oilers haven't given an update yet.
