Elliotte Friedman said this week that Nikita Kucherov's initial contract ask with the Lightning was pegged to Kirill Kaprizov's deal, around $17 million a year.

Friedman was careful on 32 Thoughts (11/2). He said he doesn't even know if Kucherov actually asked for that number, only that he was told that's the area the Lightning star was targeting.

The talks have been a running storyline for days. We covered Leo Carlsson's cap hit changing Kucherov's talks on Saturday, and that was before this number surfaced.

Friedman's reporting, as relayed by NHL Rumour Report, goes straight at the price tag.

Kucherov is 33 and his current deal expires after this season, when he's set to become an unrestricted free agent. The sheet shows no extension signed.

Kaprizov's contract is the benchmark in question. His $17 million cap hit runs from 2026-27 through 2033-34, and he has 15 goals and 26 points through 17 games for the Wild this season.

Why the Kaprizov comparison matters for Tampa

The comparison is a stretch on its face. Kaprizov is 29, with 414 career games. Kucherov is 33, with 893 games and 1143 points behind him.

Still, nobody is arguing about the production. Kucherov has 20 points in 14 games, including 16 assists, and the Lightning are 9-3-2, fourth in the Atlantic Division.

That's the problem for Julien Brisebois. Paying a 33-year-old $17 million a year through his late thirties is a risky bet, and the ask, whatever its true size, makes a fair middle ground harder to find.

It also keeps the trade chatter alive. Two days ago, a mock trade sending Kucherov to the Maple Leafs made the rounds, and numbers like this feed that kind of speculation.

Tampa has the cushion to be patient. The Lightning are 7-0-0 at home and host the Blackhawks tonight, but the contract question will outlast any single game.

Friedman's own caveat matters here. Nothing in his report says Kucherov made a formal demand, and until one side moves, the number stays a target.
