Charlie McAvoy sent Trevor Connelly into the boards tonight as the Bruins and Golden Knights played the first period in Boston, and the gloves came off.
Punches were thrown and the temperature in the building jumped fast. The game is still live as this goes up, with about a minute left in the first period, so the score and the penalty details are not something to guess at yet.
The hit itself came from a defenseman who has been one of the Bruins' steadiest players. McAvoy enters the night with 8 points in 9 games and a +6 rating, and he has built a reputation over his career for physical play, with 497 penalty minutes in 582 NHL games.

Connelly is a different kind of player. The 20-year-old winger was the 19th overall pick in 2024 and has 9 points in 15 games this season, with 1 power-play goal and 2 power-play assists. He is a skill forward, and a skill forward getting driven into the boards is exactly the kind of moment that brings teammates in.
That is why this one escalated. Vegas does not want its young forwards pushed around, and Boston does not mind setting a physical tone at home.
Why this matters for both teams in the standings
Neither team came in lacking motivation. The Bruins are 10-4-1 and sit first in the Atlantic Division, while the Golden Knights are 9-5-1 and second in the Pacific.
Vegas is coming off a 5-2 loss to the Devils on Friday, so it arrived in Boston looking for a response. Ryan Craig's group can make a statement here, and a fight early is one way to show the bench still has some fight in it.
Boston, for its part, won 5-4 in overtime against the Blackhawks on Saturday. Marco Sturm's team has a +19 goal differential, the best of the two clubs by a wide margin, and it plays with confidence at TD Garden.

The league-wide picture is tight. Boston is fourth in the NHL and Vegas is sixth, so two points tonight carry real weight, and the emotion from the first period could easily carry into the second.
There is also the question of what the league makes of the hit. Whether a penalty was called, or whether the NHL's Department of Player Safety looks at it, is unknown at this point, and McAvoy's history will be part of any conversation about it.
Both teams have another game coming fast. Vegas visits Pittsburgh on Tuesday, and Boston goes there Thursday.
Was McAvoy's hit on Connelly a clean, physical play that Vegas had no right to answer?
