A mock trade sending Simon Edvinsson from the Detroit Red Wings to the Montreal Canadiens is making the rounds Tuesday, and the price is steep.

Hot Take Hockey's version has Montreal giving up Kirby Dach, Oliver Kapanen, Adam Engstrom, a 2027 first and a 2028 first.

It landed after Sacha L. said he'd received confirmation the Habs are showcasing Engstrom tonight, with Red Wings assistant GM Kris Draper watching. He added that Kapanen is under the radar as well.

The Canadiens themselves only confirmed the lineup: Jacob Fowler in net in St. Louis, and the young defenseman taking Arber Xhekaj's spot on the blue line.

Kent Hughes should hang up on this one. Three players and two firsts for one defenseman is an overpay, plain and simple.

It's like trading your car and your bike to get a nicer bike.

So who actually says no?

Mock trade:

MTL receives:
Simon Edvinsson

DET receives:
Kirby Dach
Oliver Kapanen
Adam Engstrom

Canadiens mock trade comes with a staggering price for Red Wings' Simon Edvinsson

Dach is still looking for his first goal through 11 games.

His $3,600,000 cap hit is the piece Montreal would happily move.

Kapanen has dressed 4 times without a point.

Engstrom is a +2 through 5 games on an $896,666 cap hit.

On the other side sits Edvinsson, a 23-year-old left-shot defenseman listed at 6-foot-6 and 222 pounds.

Detroit took him sixth overall in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

He put up 31 points with the Red Wings in 2024-25 and finished at +12.

Last season brought 25 points and the same +12 rating.

Career-wise, he has 60 points in 175 NHL games.

He's not shy, either, with 158 penalty minutes over that span.

He also played for Sweden at the 2022 World Juniors.

His last listed cap hit was $894,167 through 2025-26, with RFA status attached.

Montreal's blue line is already crowded, which makes adding another defenseman an awkward fit.

Detroit's back end includes Moritz Seider, who carries an $8,550,000 cap hit.

The Canadiens are 6-3-2, while the Red Wings sit at 5-4-3.

Draper is in St. Louis tonight either way. Whether he leaves thinking about Engstrom or about two first-round picks is the part only Detroit knows.
