Simon Edvinsson landed on the Utah Mammoth's radar Thursday, and Dylan Larkin got dragged into the same conversation.

Frank Seravalli, speaking on Sports1440, named Utah one of only two teams with the picks, prospects and players to pull both Red Wings out of Detroit in a single trade.

The other one? Montreal, the same Canadiens who edged Detroit 1-0 in a shootout on October 10.

“To hear them connected to Simon Edvinsson makes a lot of sense,” Seravalli said. “You could plug him into the second pair and improve it.”

The Mammoth don't look like a team begging for help. They're 6-2-0, first in their division, and won 4-2 in Edmonton on Thursday night.

But the blue line behind Mikhail Sergachev is where the questions start. Nate Schmidt is 35, Mackenzie Weegar is 32, and Dmitry Simashev is still 21.

Sergachev is carrying the offence from the back end with 9 points through 8 games. Nobody else on that defence has more than 4.

Shawn Horcoff faces a Larkin question with Detroit last in its division

The Red Wings are 2-3-2, eighth in the division and 26th overall. They've scored just 16 goals in seven games.

So why would Detroit even take the call?

Edvinsson is a 23-year-old left shot at 6-foot-6, taken sixth overall by the Red Wings in 2021. Bill Armstrong would be buying size and runway in one package.

The production has climbed too. He put up 31 points in 2024-25, then followed with 25 points and a +12 rating over 72 games last season.

Here's the problem. Shipping a young, 6-foot-6 defenceman to a contender so it can patch its second pair is exactly how rebuilds stall for another five years.

Larkin is a different animal. He's 30, carries an $8,700,000 cap hit and logged 23:15 in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Flyers, chipping in an assist.

Asking for both in one deal is like walking into a neighbour's open house and making an offer on the furniture too.

Kent Hughes has the prospect pipeline Seravalli is talking about. He also has a blue line in Montreal giving up 3.9 goals per game.

Lane Hutson leads that group with 8 points, and Michael Matheson is day-to-day with a lower-body issue. Martin St-Louis could use the help.

The Red Wings host San Jose on Saturday, while the Mammoth get Edmonton again the same night. Utah doesn't visit Detroit until January 7.

If Detroit's slow start bleeds into November, that two-team list stops sounding like a radio segment and starts sounding like a shortlist.
