James Reimer has signed a professional tryout with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers' AHL affiliate, according to HockeyFeed.

The 38-year-old is set to join Hartford this weekend as he tries to work his way back into the NHL picture.

Reimer has appeared in 539 regular-season NHL games with a .909 career save percentage, per the same report.

Last season with Ottawa, he went 7-4-2 with an .886 save percentage.

It's a smart, cheap insurance move. The Rangers can't afford to be one more injury away from scrambling for a goalie.

Signing a veteran on a tryout is like keeping a spare tire in the trunk. You hope you never need it, but you'd hate to be without one.

Dylan Garand has carried the load in New York, sitting at .951 with a shutout.

Igor Shesterkin is out until at least Sept. 15, and Joonas Korpisalo until at least Nov. 9.

Elliotte Friedman said Drury is making a list and checking it twice as he evaluates the goalie market.

Rangers goaltending scout Scott Clemmensen also attended the Sabres-Canadiens game, according to Friedman.

Reimer earned his last NHL deal the same way, turning a Belleville tryout in January 2026 into a one-year, $850,000 contract with Ottawa.

He has played for eight organizations, starting in Toronto after the Maple Leafs drafted him in 2006.

He helped those Leafs return to the playoffs in 2012-13, and he represented Canada at the Spengler Cup before that Ottawa deal.

The Rangers are 6-2-0 and have allowed just 14 goals.

Garand has appeared in six of New York's eight games, so the workload is very real for Mike Sullivan's starter.

Is Reimer just Hartford insurance, or a real option if Garand cools off?

New York visits New Jersey tonight and Columbus on Saturday before Anaheim comes to town Monday.

At 38, he clearly isn't done yet. The Rangers just bought a cheap answer to a question they hope they never have to ask.
