The reason plenty of this has popped up is due to the fact that Bergevin, who has been with the team since 2012, is on a contract set to expire at seasons end. On Wednesday, he told media that he absolutely wants to discuss an extension with the club, however the likelihood that happens apparently isn't all too high.
According to Sportsnet's Eric Engels, the Canadiens will likely have a new GM at this time next year.
«If I had to put a bet on it right now, I would probably bet this is his last year as GM here, unless something changes drastically between him and Molson over the coming weeks,» Engels said to Jeff Marek.
This is quite surprising given the fact that the Canadiens have extremely successful as of late under Bergevin's tenure. Just this past season, his squad was able to advance all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. Of course, there is still plenty of time for the two sides to put aside whatever clear tension they are going through and make something happen, but right now it doesn't sound all that likely.
