The New York Rangers have recalled Spencer Martin from Hartford, giving Mike Sullivan a new goalie tandem after injuries sidelined his NHL options.

The move follows confirmation that Igor Shesterkin will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Losing their starting goaltender changes New York's plans immediately.

Joonas Korpisalo is also out with an injury, so this isn't a straightforward backup recall. The Rangers suddenly need to cover both spots in their NHL crease.

Martin joins Dylan Garand in New York. Both opened the season with the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, and that minor-league pairing is now being asked to handle the Rangers' net.

For Martin, the promotion offers immediate NHL work under difficult circumstances. There's no established NHL starter beside him to absorb the toughest assignments.

Sullivan must manage starts and workloads without either expected option. The Rangers' defensive structure becomes even more important with an unfamiliar tandem behind the blue line.

Rangers face major decisions after Spencer Martin recall

Shesterkin has been placed on standard long-term injured reserve, creating $3.97 million in additional cap space. New York hasn't used the season-ending designation despite ruling him out for the year.

That distinction leaves another decision for the front office. The Rangers can change his designation later if they want more spending room.

Season-ending LTIR could provide relief on Shesterkin's full $11.57 million cap hit. The trade-off is that he couldn't be activated during the current season.

The Dallas Stars took a similar route with Tyler Seguin following his knee injury, initially using standard LTIR before switching his designation later in the year.

But cap flexibility won't stop pucks. Garand and Martin must adjust to NHL shooters, faster puck movement and the pressure that comes with replacing a franchise starter.

That puts extra attention on clean breakouts, defensive coverage and communication around the crease. Sullivan needs his skaters to make this transition manageable rather than leave the new tandem exposed.

Martin's recall answers an urgent roster problem, not the bigger uncertainty in goal. A goaltender who began the year in Hartford is suddenly central to New York's plans.
