Mitch Marner got the last laugh Thursday night as Vegas erased a 3-0 Maple Leafs lead and won 4-3 in a shootout.

Toronto built that cushion within the first ten minutes. Then the Leafs spent most of the night chasing the puck.

"We're a resilient team. We stayed with it," Marner said after the game.

"We have a lot of confidence in our game throughout 60 minutes, and we did a great job of that," he added.

Some outlets read that as a dig at his old team. It's a reach, since he was describing his own team's comeback and nothing more.

Turning that quote into a cheap shot is like reading a birthday card from your ex and finding a hidden insult in "Have a great day."

Marner finished with an assist and 5 shots on goal in 24:10 of ice time.

Sergei Bobrovsky makes 40 saves and still can't find a win

The real story was the shot clock. Vegas outshot Toronto 43-24, and the Leafs spent long stretches hemmed in after building their lead.

Bobrovsky stopped all but 3 of those shots, and he's still looking for his first win of the season.

He's now 0-2-1 with a .906 save percentage, numbers that undersell how hard he's been working.

Easton Cowan, Nick Paul and Jack Roslovic scored for Toronto, giving Cowan 2 goals on the season.

Jack Eichel, Brett Howden and Mark Stone answered for Vegas, and Eichel now sits at 12 points.

Adin Hill made 21 saves on 24 shots and earned the shootout win for Vegas.

Jim Hiller will want answers on how a three-goal cushion turned into a shootout loss.

Jake McCabe caught Marner clean in the open ice earlier in the night, which only made the ending sting more for Toronto.

Is this group capable of closing out a game on the road? Thursday said no.

Toronto falls to 2-2-1, while Vegas improves to 4-1-0 and has won three straight.

The Leafs visit Colorado on Saturday, and the Avalanche just put 7 goals on Calgary on Thursday.

If Toronto builds another early lead Saturday, the Avalanche will find out quickly whether this group learned anything at all.
