Kirill Marchenko is suddenly at the centre of a major Toronto Maple Leafs story for head coach Jim Hiller, with trade talks reaching a serious stage.

Elliotte Friedman reported Monday afternoon that the Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets are “deep in discussions” on a trade involving Marchenko. That wording carries weight, even with no completed deal announced.

For Toronto, this has moved beyond the usual name floating through the rumour mill. One of the NHL's most connected insiders is reporting direct discussions between the two clubs.

Marchenko would give Hiller another major piece for his top six, but the bigger question now concerns what Toronto would have to surrender to get him.

And that's where this story gets uncomfortable for Leafs fans. Matthew Knies has already been pulled directly into the speculation surrounding a potential blockbuster.

Marco D'Amico added another layer minutes later, writing that if Columbus general manager Don Waddell “sticks to his guns,” Knies should be involved in the deal. That's not confirmation Knies has been offered.

It is still a striking development. A Marchenko pursuit is one thing. A negotiation carrying the possibility of Knies moving the other way changes the entire scale of what Toronto and Columbus may be discussing.

There is no completed trade at this point, and neither report establishes that Toronto has agreed to include Knies. Friedman specifically reported deep discussions involving Marchenko, while D'Amico presented Knies as the potential price if Waddell maintains his position.

That distinction matters because negotiations can change quickly. But Knies entering the conversation shows why this situation deserves attention well beyond a routine preseason trade rumour.
