Edmonton Oilers cut 10 players and there is one big surprise

Quinn Hutson scored the winner in Vancouver last night. By Friday afternoon, the Edmonton Oilers had loaned him to Bakersfield anyway.

The forward fired five shots on goal in Thursday's 2-1 road win over the Canucks.

He also logged 15:55 and went plus-2. That line usually buys a player one more look.

Not in Edmonton. Not this week. Hutson was one of seven players loaned to the Condors in a sweeping Friday cut.

Tomas Cibulka went with him, one night after setting up a goal and logging 17:00 on the blue line in that same win.

Viljami Marjala also picked up an assist in Vancouver, along with three shots. It didn't matter.

Connor Clattenburg, William Nicholl, Aku Raty and goaltender Connor Ungar round out the group headed to the AHL.

Three Oilers hit waivers as Stan Bowman trims the roster

Stan Bowman's front office wasn't done there. Josh Brown, Riley Stillman and Eduards Tralmaks were placed on waivers for the purpose of reassignment to Bakersfield.

Stillman's case stands out. The defenseman skated 17:51 against the Canucks and finished plus-1.

Tralmaks played a lighter 11:36 in the same game. Any of the three could be claimed by another club before ever reaching the Condors.

Seth Griffith's camp is over. Edmonton released him from his professional tryout.

Four more prospects are going back to junior: Rudolfs Berzkalns, Caden Harvey, David Lewandowski and Andrew Robinson.

Berzkalns and Lewandowski both dressed Thursday. Both were held off the scoresheet.

So why ship out the guy who actually won the game?

This one's a bad call. Hutson gave Mike Babcock exactly what a depth forward is supposed to give, and he got a bus ticket for it.

It's like getting the employee of the month plaque and a transfer notice in the same envelope.

Edmonton's cap sheet makes the logic worse. Leon Draisaitl carries a $14,000,000 hit and Connor McDavid sits at $12,500,000.

When that much money lives in two jerseys, cheap scoring from the bottom six is how a contender survives February.

The Oilers have won three straight, and Babcock, hired in June, gets one more look Saturday night when Calgary visits.

The regular season opens Tuesday at home against Vancouver, the same club Hutson just beat.

If the depth scoring stalls in October, the first call to Bakersfield writes itself. Who gets it is a different argument.
