Major announcement from the Sharks confirms Celebrini's true future with the organization

Macklin Celebrini is now Ryan Warsofsky's captain in San Jose, a major move for a 20-year-old already carrying the franchise.

The Sharks made it official Friday, handing Celebrini the C and making him the youngest captain in franchise history. San Jose has put its locker room directly in his hands.

It also ends the leadership vacancy left when Logan Couture retired in 2025. San Jose waited, watched its young core develop, then went straight to its biggest name.

The decision follows Celebrini's new 5-year, $94 million contract. Mike Grier has already committed major money to the center, and now the organization has attached its leadership identity to him as well.

Celebrini earned that responsibility with a massive second NHL season. He finished with 115 points in 82 games while driving San Jose's offense from the middle of the ice.

For Warsofsky, the choice removes any question about whose voice will help set the standard inside the room. Celebrini isn't only the centerpiece on the ice anymore.

San Jose puts everything behind Celebrini

This isn't Celebrini's first leadership assignment. He wore an alternate captain's letter last season, giving the Sharks a full year to watch how he handled added responsibility.

The announcement also carried some Sharks history with it. Joe Thornton presented Celebrini with the captain's C, linking one of the franchise's biggest names directly to its new face.

Celebrini's leadership résumé grew internationally too. He recorded 10 points in 6 games for Canada at the 2026 Olympics while playing on one of hockey's biggest stages.

Months later, Canada gave him the captaincy at the World Championship. Celebrini responded with 14 points in 10 games, another sign that leadership duties haven't slowed his offensive output.

San Jose now enters a season carrying real pressure to move forward. The Sharks haven't reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2018-19, and expectations around this young roster have changed.

That puts more on Celebrini than goals, controlled entries or power-play production. He'll now be the player teammates and coaches look toward when a road trip turns rough or momentum swings.

The Sharks have made their direction clear. Celebrini has the contract, the production and now the C. At 20, San Jose has officially made him the player expected to lead everything that comes next.
