The Winnipeg Jets are dealing with a scheduling headache that has nothing to do with hockey and everything to do with the clock.
Manitoba's decision to adopt permanent daylight time is reshaping how this team travels for the entire 2026-27 season.
"It kind of throws things off for us in the NHL," head coach Scott Arniel said.
Every Central Division opponent now sits an hour off from Winnipeg's new time, eliminating an hour the Jets used to gain flying home from eastern time zone road trips.
Arniel said the team is already on roughly the 12th draft of its travel schedule trying to sort through the changes.
Twelve home games at Canada Life Centre already had their start times pushed back an hour due to national broadcast requirements on Sportsnet and Prime.
Winnipeg finished 35-35-12 last season, 26th overall, and this year's group is hoping better scheduling overall, not just the time zone shift, leads to healthier legs across an 84-game slate.
Why one specific road trip really shows the complexity
A St. Louis road game on December 15 illustrates the problem well. The team's return flight now lands at 2:15 a.m. in Winnipeg instead of the usual 1:15 a.m.
That extra hour matters under the collective bargaining agreement, since any team activity past 2 a.m. eliminates a scheduled day off the next day, forcing Arniel to find a new recovery date elsewhere.
Trips to the mountain or Pacific time zones now come with real costs too, turning a one or two-hour loss into two or three hours on the way home.
Winnipeg forward Dylan Samberg, a Minnesota native, joked his own family will need time adjusting to the new viewing schedule for Jets road games.
Morgan Barron's family, based mostly in Nova Scotia, stands to benefit instead, with home games shifting to a more reasonable hour for them to watch.
This year's shortened two-week preseason and the absence of a three-week Olympic break should help offset some of the added complexity, giving Winnipeg more practice time overall than last season's grind.
Every opponent visiting Winnipeg faces this same scheduling puzzle. How well Arniel's staff manages it may end up mattering more than anyone outside the organization realizes.
