Juraj Slafkovsky isn't the same player from one line to the next, and that flexibility might be exactly what makes him so valuable to Montreal.
Analysts broke down the split this week, and the difference in his usage is real.
"When Slaf plays with Demidov and Kapanen, he possesses the puck more through the neutral zone and in the offensive zone," the analysis noted.
Ivan Demidov and Oliver Kapanen give Slafkovsky more room to carry pucks himself rather than working strictly around the crease.
Kapanen posted 37 points in 82 games last season, a two-way winger whose habit of parking himself around the net gives Slafkovsky room to operate on the outside.
"A guy like Kapanen frees up Slaf a little bit because Kapanen is a guy that usually is around the net," the breakdown continued.
That's a different job entirely from what Slafkovsky does when he's paired with Montreal's top line instead.

"When he plays with Suzie and Cole, his job is heavily tilted towards being around the net," the analysis explained.
Slafkovsky posted 73 points in 82 games last season, adding 30 goals, numbers that came from succeeding in both roles depending on who's on his wing.
Nick Suzuki posted 101 points in 82 games last season, and Cole Caufield's shooting demands real net-front traffic to open up his own lanes, exactly the job Slafkovsky fills there.
"He's good at that, but he's also really good in possession on the outside," the breakdown added, underlining just how rare that dual skill set actually is.
Montreal finished 48-24-10 for 106 points this season, sixth overall, and head coach Martin St-Louis now has real flexibility deploying Slafkovsky in either role depending on matchup or need.
Most young power forwards get typecast into one job early. Slafkovsky's ability to succeed in both spots gives Montreal options most teams simply don't have with a 22-year-old winger.
