A Nikishin-for-Hellebuyck trade sounds clean on paper, but Pierre LeBrun found the real complication buried inside it.
"The obvious fly in the ointment is whether Winnipeg would want to inherit the problem Carolina has, as far as not knowing if he would sign," LeBrun said on The Athletic.
That's the crux of it. Winnipeg wouldn't just be adding a talented young defenseman. It would be adding the exact same contract uncertainty currently paralyzing Carolina.
Nikishin posted 33 points in 81 games last season, adding 18 points in 17 playoff games during Carolina's Stanley Cup run, real production for a 24-year-old blueliner.
He requested a trade from Carolina this offseason and remains unsigned, sitting out training camp along with a small group of other unresolved RFAs.
According to NHL Rumour Report, Nikishin was reportedly available in a Hellebuyck deal as far back as the June draft, when his contract demands were already considered steep.
Those demands have likely climbed even higher since Zeev Buium's $9,300,000 AAV extension in Vancouver reset expectations for young, high-upside defensemen league-wide.

Hellebuyck remains suspended after failing to report to camp, posting an .895 save percentage across 57 games last season before this standoff escalated.
Trading a franchise goaltender for a defenseman who might not sign anywhere near Winnipeg's number would just swap one unresolved contract problem for another.
GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has already said the return needs to reflect Hellebuyck's caliber, and taking on a player with his own extension fight attached complicates that math significantly.
Carolina finished second overall this season, and even that level of success hasn't been enough to get Nikishin to commit to a new deal there.
If a winning, well-run organization like Carolina couldn't solve this, Winnipeg inheriting the exact same negotiation feels like a real gamble rather than a clean solution.
Whether this specific swap ever gets finalized may come down to whether Winnipeg is willing to take on someone else's contract fight while still navigating its own goaltending mess.
