J.T. Miller filled out one of those first day of camp chalkboards for the Rangers, and under what he wants to be when he grows up, he wrote retired.
The post went up Thursday. One quote tweet later, a gag on a blackboard had turned into a talking point.
It's a joke. The same board asked what he loves, and the answer there was his family.
Matthew Rempe wrote day trader on his. Nobody built a news cycle around a forward who played 26 games and scored once last season.
Here's the part that should actually bother people in New York. He finished the year with a -30 rating.
That happened across 68 games on an $8,000,000 cap hit. No chalkboard is fixing that number.
The production didn't vanish. 53 points, 36 of them assists, so the playmaking is still very much there.

The road wasn't the issue. They went 20-19-2 away from home and still couldn't hold their own building.
New York finished 34-39-9 for 77 points. Not a year anybody in that market wants revisited.
Igor Shesterkin carried an $11,500,000 cap hit and posted a .911 save percentage. He wasn't the problem.
Mika Zibanejad piled up 78 points and still landed at a -20. Two expensive forwards, both underwater in the same column.
Adam Fox appeared in only 55 games on a $9,500,000 cap hit. That's a lot of nights without him on the blue line.
Pavel Dorofeyev gave them 64 points on a $1,835,000 deal. That contract did more for the roster than most of the expensive ones.
Mike Sullivan took the job in May 2025 and then watched this group land 29th overall. Chris Drury built the thing.
They scored 238 goals and gave up 250. The margin stayed thin all year and it tipped the wrong way most nights.
So why did a chalkboard become a story? Because a fan base coming off that season grabs at any piece of driftwood floating past.
Camp gets serious in a hurry. The jokes stop, the questions get sharper, and everyone in that room knows what the standings looked like.
Put up another season like that one and nobody laughs at Miller's board a second time. They'll just start asking whether he meant it.
