Brendan Gallagher's first look in Vancouver under Manny Malhotra came with an unexpected twist: a fourth-line assignment.
Gallagher opened Canucks camp alongside Drew O'Connor and Max Sasson, a combination that immediately raised questions about where the veteran winger fits.
Thomas Drance reported the trio during a Group A practice, giving Vancouver fans their first real glimpse at Gallagher's possible deployment.
It's a sharp change from the role Gallagher carried for years in Montreal, where his identity was tied to relentless work around the crease and a major locker-room presence.

The rest of the group included Jake DeBrusk with Elias Pettersson and Jonathan Lekkerimaki, giving the top unit a much different offensive look.
Gallagher's line sat behind that group in the rotation. Even at camp, that's enough to generate discussion around how Malhotra plans to use his new winger.
Nothing is locked in during September. Coaches experiment with combinations, evaluate chemistry and test players in situations that may disappear before opening night.
But Gallagher's assignment still carries weight because Vancouver didn't begin camp by placing him beside its most established offensive players.
That creates an immediate challenge. Gallagher has built his career around pressure, net-front work and forcing coaches to trust him in difficult minutes.
A strong camp could quickly change the equation. If Gallagher drives play, creates chances and brings energy shift after shift, Vancouver has room to move him higher.
If the combination sticks, the Canucks could instead view him as an experienced bottom-six winger who can bring edge and accountability to a younger group.
Either way, Gallagher's Vancouver chapter has already produced its first storyline. He arrived with years of NHL experience, but his spot on the depth chart clearly isn't being handed to him.
