Elias Pettersson opened Canucks camp beside Jake DeBrusk and Linus Karlsson as Manny Malhotra immediately started reshaping Vancouver's lineup.
The first day in Penticton offered an early look at Malhotra's thinking, and several combinations stood out. With a shortened preseason ahead, these experiments won't have much time to breathe.
Pettersson stayed with DeBrusk, his most familiar winger from last season, while Karlsson received the first opportunity on the opposite side. It's an early top-six audition with real opening-night implications.
Filip Hronek also drew a different partner than many expected. Rather than skating beside Zeev Buium, Hronek worked with towering newcomer Jamie Oleksiak.
That pairing gives Vancouver a veteran-heavy option on the blue line while allowing Buium to develop beside Luke Schenn. Elias Pettersson and Tom Willander formed another defence pair.
Group B brought another notable decision up front. Filip Chytil remained at centre, skating between Paul Cotter and Brock Boeser instead of shifting to the wing.
Manny Malhotra puts young Canucks in prime spots
Jonathan Lekkerimäki received one of the day's most interesting assignments. He skated with Marco Rossi and Liam Öhgren, placing three skilled young forwards together immediately.
That combination could give Lekkerimäki the offensive role he's been chasing. Rossi's creativity through the middle also makes the line one of Vancouver's most intriguing camp experiments.
Malhotra didn't have the luxury of easing into his first NHL training camp as a head coach. Vancouver has just four preseason games before the regular season begins September 29.
That compressed schedule raises the stakes for players fighting from outside the projected lineup. Aatu Räty, Arshdeep Bains, Braeden Cootes, Victor Mancini and Kirill Kudryavtsev all opened camp with work to do.
The early combinations point toward competition rather than fixed jobs. Malhotra can still move pieces quickly depending on who handles his systems, pace and defensive expectations.
Vancouver's first preseason test comes Saturday in Seattle. From there, every practice and exhibition game becomes another chance for the younger Canucks to force a lineup decision.
Day 1 didn't settle Vancouver's roster. But Pettersson's new right winger, Hronek's imposing partner and Lekkerimäki's elevated assignment made one thing clear: Malhotra isn't wasting camp.
