Dylan Larkin gave Todd McLellan and the Red Wings another layer of uncertainty Thursday by keeping the reason for his trade request deeply personal.
Meeting with Detroit reporters, Larkin acknowledged that the reasons behind his request are personal and said he isn't sure he'll ever reveal exactly what pushed him to that point.
That answer immediately makes this bigger than a standard contract dispute or frustration over a season. Larkin didn't point toward money, ice time, roster construction or one isolated disagreement.
Instead, he left the most important part of the story behind a closed door. And for a player who has spent his entire NHL run in Detroit, that silence carries weight.

The other major question didn't get an answer either. Asked whether the trade request still stands today, Larkin declined to clarify his position.
That distinction matters. Larkin also said he's committed to playing in Detroit for now, but he stopped short of saying the request had been withdrawn.

So the Red Wings now have two separate issues hanging over them: what originally drove Larkin to ask out, and whether he still wants the organization to move him.
Those aren't small details entering another season under McLellan. Larkin remains one of Detroit's most productive forwards after recording 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games last season.
His contract adds another layer. Larkin carries an $8,700,000 cap hit through the 2030-31 season, meaning any decision involving him would reach far beyond a short-term roster adjustment.
What stood out Thursday wasn't a public clash with management. It was the opposite. Larkin kept the underlying issue private while refusing to close the door on the trade request itself.
That leaves Detroit in an unusual spot. The relationship is functional enough for Larkin to say he's committed to playing, yet unresolved enough that he wouldn't confirm he's changed his mind about wanting out.
Until Larkin says the request is gone, every major Red Wings development can circle back to the same question. Detroit knows he's staying in the locker room for now. What it still doesn't know publicly is whether he wants that to last.
