Connor Hellebuyck has put Winnipeg in a bind, and head coach Scott Arniel now faces a camp carrying far more noise than expected.
The star goaltender requested a trade during his exit meetings at the end of last season, putting his future with the Winnipeg Jets directly in question.
General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff addressed the situation Thursday and pushed back hard on the idea that Hellebuyck had an understanding allowing him to force a move.
“A contract is a contract in the National Hockey League. Period. There are no side agreements, there are no gentlemen agreements. The league doesn't allow for that, so any notion around that would not have any merit.”

That response leaves very little room for interpretation. Winnipeg's position is that the contract stands on its own, regardless of anything Hellebuyck may have expected when he signed it.
Cheveldayoff also made it clear that the Jets aren't pretending the relationship is business as usual after the trade request became public.
Jets now searching for a way forward
Winnipeg's GM acknowledged the uncomfortable spot both sides now occupy while stopping short of revealing where trade discussions currently stand.
“Unfortunately the situation is what it is, we're looking to find a resolution that works for both sides … the choices he makes are the choices he makes.”
That wording puts some distance between management and its No. 1 goaltender. Hellebuyck made his request, and Winnipeg now has to decide how aggressively it wants to respond.
"Cheveldayoff said the challenge with trading Hellebuyck is that so many teams already have No. 1 goalies in place (and that those teams are the ones that Hellebuyck wants to be moved to)."
The timing adds another layer for Arniel. Training camp is supposed to establish roles, combinations and structure, not revolve around uncertainty involving one of the biggest names in the locker room.

Cheveldayoff also has little reason to rush simply because a request has been made. His comments make Winnipeg's stance clear: Hellebuyck's preference matters, but it doesn't erase the contract.
For Hellebuyck, the next move becomes just as important. Reporting to camp, speaking publicly or maintaining his trade request could each change the temperature around the Jets.
Winnipeg has now answered the agreement question directly. The bigger one remains unresolved: whether Hellebuyck will still be in the Jets' crease when the season begins.
