Anze Kopitar's retirement closes a chapter in Los Angeles Kings history. Drew Doughty opening the next one is what makes this transition feel seamless instead of jarring.
Doughty is officially the 15th captain in franchise history, stepping into the role the moment Kopitar walked away after last season.
There was never really a debate about who takes over. Doughty was the clear frontrunner from the day Kopitar's retirement became official.
This is the first time in years the Kings have had to answer the question of who leads this room, and the answer came from within the same era that just ended.
Doughty enters his 19th NHL season, every one of them with Los Angeles, a loyalty that mirrors exactly what Kopitar represented for this franchise.
He posted 23 points in 72 games last season at 36 years old, still logging real minutes for a Kings team that finished 35-27-20.
Doughty carries 165 career goals as a defenseman, the most in franchise history, adding 544 assists for 709 points across 1,279 games.

Why this feels like continuity, not a rebuild
Doughty enters this season just 17 games from tying Dustin Brown's franchise record of 1,296 games played, and 21 games from hitting 1,300 for his career.
That would make him just the 22nd defenseman in NHL history to reach that number, joining names like Nicklas Lidstrom and Ray Bourque.
"Drew Doughty has earned this," GM Ken Holland said. "He's a champion who's won Stanley Cups and competed at the highest level of this game for a long time."
Los Angeles named Adrian Kempe, Artemi Panarin, and Mikey Anderson as alternate captains, rounding out a leadership group built around proven veterans rather than untested newcomers.
Kempe posted 73 points in 81 games last season, and Panarin added 84 points in 78 games, giving this room real production behind its new captain.
Kopitar's number won't be replaced anytime soon in this locker room. But handing the letter to a two-time Cup champion who's been here just as long keeps the standard exactly where it was.
The era with Kopitar wearing the C is over. The one with Doughty leading it starts now, with the same goal still sitting at the center of everything.
