Alexander Nikishin wants out of Carolina, and one hypothetical scenario has him landing in Toronto.
There's no report of actual talks between the Hurricanes and Maple Leafs. This is speculation, not a confirmed deal in motion.
But the pieces are worth walking through given how loudly Nikishin's name has circulated since requesting a trade this offseason.
Nikishin posted 33 points in 81 games during his rookie season, adding 18 points in 17 playoff games during Carolina's Stanley Cup run.
Toronto already reshaped its blue line this summer, adding Darren Raddysh in a sign-and-trade from Tampa Bay, but real depth questions remain heading into camp.
Nikishin is reportedly seeking a new deal around $9,500,000 annually on a long-term contract, a number that would require real cap maneuvering for Toronto to fit him in.
Morgan Rielly's $7,500,000 cap hit and Dakota Joshua's $3,250,000 hit are the two contracts that would likely need to move for this to work financially.
What Toronto would actually have to give up
Rielly posted 36 points in 78 games last season, going minus-18, numbers that suggest his role could realistically be replaced by a younger, cheaper option like Nikishin.
Joshua managed just 18 points in 55 games, making him a more expendable piece in a deal built around freeing up cap room.
A realistic package would send prospect Tinus Luc Koblar, Toronto's 2029 first-round pick, its 2027 second-rounder, and a Blue Jackets second-round pick back to Carolina.
That's a real cost in both prospects and draft capital, but pairing Nikishin with Raddysh would give Toronto two young, locked-in defensemen for years to come.
Head coach Craig Berube would gain a genuine top-pairing option without needing to worry about that spot again for a long time.
Whether Toronto actually pursues this or Nikishin lands somewhere else entirely, his name is officially out there now, and rival teams know exactly what it would take to get a deal done.
