Elias Pettersson's name is being floated in Edmonton, and it isn't just idle chatter.
Oilers insider Bob Stauffer has repeatedly raised the idea of Edmonton targeting a "distressed asset" at forward, a theme he first brought up back in May.
"I envision the potential acquisition at some point during the year of a distressed asset off another team," Stauffer said on the Got Yer Back podcast.
Edmonton didn't add a true top-six forward this summer, instead bolstering the group with checkers like Mathieu Joseph, who posted just 11 points in 51 games last season.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins remains a key piece up front, posting 56 points in 72 games last season, but Edmonton's depth behind him still leaves real questions on the top two lines.
Whether Matt Savoie, Isaac Howard or Nugent-Hopkins himself can carry bigger roles this season will likely shape how aggressively Edmonton shops at the deadline.
Pettersson fits the profile Stauffer keeps describing almost too well. A massive contract, six years left at $11,600,000 annually, paired with production that cratered last season.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli pushed back on the idea that Vancouver trades Pettersson anytime soon.
"I think the Canucks have made a concerted effort, knowing that any return hasn't been there, that they need to spend time rehabbing his game," Seravalli said.
Pettersson posted 51 points in 74 games last season, going minus-30, a steep drop from a player once ranked 19th overall in the world by The Athletic back in 2023.
The math around his contract has also shifted. As the salary cap keeps climbing league-wide, an $11,600,000 hit looks less crippling than it did when he first signed it.
Stauffer's exact profile calls for a right-shot forward with some skill, a detail that doesn't perfectly match Pettersson's game or handedness.
Any deal like this would also require Vancouver to eat a real chunk of the contract, the same way San Jose absorbed money taking Darnell Nurse off Edmonton's hands previously.
Whether Pettersson himself ever lands in Edmonton or not, insiders agree the profile Stauffer keeps describing is exactly the kind of gamble Edmonton could make in February.
