Matthew Knies broke his silence Tuesday on the trade rumors that trailed him all offseason, and the Toronto Maple Leafs winger did not dodge it.
Speaking on TSN's Leafs Morning Take, Knies got straight to the point about a summer where his name never seemed to leave the rumor mill.
"I'm fortunate that I'm still here and that I'm a part of this group, cuz I love these guys," Knies said.
That is not a throwaway line. That is a player who clearly heard every whisper and chose to answer it head on instead of hiding.
The rumors never named a specific destination in this clip, and Knies did not go there either. He kept it to gratitude and nothing more.
But the timing matters. This comes right as the Maple Leafs enter a new era under first-year head coach Jim Hiller, hired back in June.
Knies is coming off a 79-game season with 23 goals, 43 assists and 66 points, numbers that look solid on the surface.

Dig deeper and the picture gets messier. He finished at minus-30, and his production cooled hard down the stretch. Seven points in his final 10 games.
Toronto did not make his case any easier. The Maple Leafs closed the year on a seven-game losing streak, finishing 32-36-14 for 78 points.
A team that fades like that, with a top-six piece bleeding minus numbers down the stretch, is exactly the kind of roster where trade winds start swirling. Knies became the obvious name to attach.
He carries a $7,750,000 cap hit, no small number for a player whose plus-minus fell off a cliff in the second half. That combination is why rival GMs kept calling all summer.
Hiller now inherits a winger who says all the right things about loyalty and locker room chemistry, but whose underlying numbers gave Toronto every excuse to listen if the phone rang.

Knies sounds settled. Whether the front office feels the same way once training camp results start rolling in is a different question entirely, and nobody in that Leafs locker room has an answer yet.
