Connor Hellebuyck's trade request has put Scott Arniel's Jets in a nasty bind before camp.
The biggest problem isn't the request. Winnipeg is reportedly hearing back offers described as “terrible” even with several possible destinations in play from interested clubs.
That can freeze a deal. Once rival clubs sense the Jets are under pressure, every conversation begins with Winnipeg defending its asking price.
Hellebuyck also reportedly won't waive his no-trade protection for a Canadian destination, removing a major slice of the league from the bidding.

That leaves Winnipeg squeezed. The Jets may have teams Hellebuyck would accept, but they still need one of them to pay a serious price.
Kevin Cheveldayoff now faces the part every GM hates: a public request and a market that won't meet the price. Waiting protects value but extends the noise.
Winnipeg is running out of leverage
For Scott Arniel, the problem moves to the crease. Hellebuyck can remain the starter, but every practice and media session keeps the story alive as camp gets closer.
That can seep into a locker room fast. Teammates are preparing for a season while the franchise's biggest goaltending question stays unresolved.
The Jets can't treat this like a salary dump. Any Hellebuyck deal has to bring enough value back to justify losing their starter.
And the longer talks drag, the more rival clubs can wait. Winnipeg needs urgency on the other side of the phone, not curiosity.
The reported Canada stance makes that harder. Fewer acceptable landing spots mean fewer paths to a bidding battle, exactly what Winnipeg needs.
If the offers stay weak, the Jets may have to hold Hellebuyck longer than planned. That keeps the goalie but not the peace.
That's why this has become more than a normal trade request. Hellebuyck wants out, yet Winnipeg still doesn't have a clean exit.
One strong offer can change everything. Until it arrives, Connor Hellebuyck controls more of Winnipeg's options than the Jets would ever want in the middle of September.
