Quinn Hughes just sent a pointed message about his own future with the Minnesota Wild.
Everyone seems to have an opinion on where his career goes from here, but Hughes made clear whose opinion actually matters to him.
"It is my life. I'm not going to do anything to make someone else happy," Hughes said, according to Michael Traikos.
"Obviously, I like to think of myself as a thoughtful person," he added.
He kept going from there. "I think that everyone's got to do whatever makes them happy and where the chips fall they fall," Hughes said.
That's about as direct a statement of self-determination as a star player can make in public.
It carries extra weight given the timeline attached to it. Hughes has one season left on his deal before hitting unrestricted free agency next summer.

Hughes has been sensational since arriving in Minnesota, posting 7 goals and 69 assists for 76 points across 74 games last season.
He was even better in the playoffs, adding 4 goals and 11 assists for 15 points across 11 postseason games.
Minnesota finished last season 46-24-12, good for seventh overall, exactly the kind of contending environment a star wants to stay part of.
Yet a quote this pointed, this close to a contract year, is impossible to read as purely reassuring.
It's the equivalent of a top employee saying they'll always do what's best for their own career, right as their contract renewal comes into view.
Is Hughes signaling genuine contentment in Minnesota, or quietly preparing everyone for the possibility that he moves again?
He's already left one franchise once by pushing for a trade out of Vancouver, so betting against him doing what he wants again feels risky.
My take: comments this blunt about doing what's best for yourself are rarely accidental. Hughes knows exactly what he's saying and to whom.
Camp is close, and Minnesota now enters a contract year with its best player already talking like someone keeping every option open.
