Lane Hutson is doing something no defenseman has done since Cale Makar

Cale Makar just set the fastest-ever pace for a defenseman to hit 200 career points, and this week Lane Hutson is already chasing him down.

Makar reached 200 career points in just 195 games, the quickest any defenseman in NHL history has gotten there.

He also owns the record for fastest defenseman to 200 career assists, getting there in 254 games.

Two records. One player. Both now hanging over the rest of the league's blue line.

This past season alone, Makar posted 79 points in 75 games for the Avalanche, including 20 goals and 59 assists.

That kind of production is exactly why nobody assumed his records would stay untouched for long.

Enter Hutson. The Canadiens defenseman sits at 146 career points through 166 games, with 18 goals and 128 assists.

Hutson needs 72 assists in 87 games to catch Makar

That is the number that matters. Hit 72 helpers in his next 87 games and Hutson breaks Makar's fastest-to-200-assists mark outright.

The points record is a different animal. Hutson would need 54 points in his next 28 games, a pace that borders on unreasonable even for him.

Context matters here. Hutson just posted 78 points in 82 regular-season games this year, then added 16 more in 19 playoff games with 13 assists.

He racks up helpers the way some players rack up penalty minutes, constantly, quietly, without anyone quite noticing until the number is staring back at you.

Makar's Avalanche finished 55-16-11, the best record in the league, before dropping four straight to the Golden Knights in the second round.

Montreal finished 48-24-10 under Martin St-Louis, good for sixth overall, with Hutson anchoring a blue line that keeps getting more dangerous.

Bob's take? The assist record is very much alive. The points record is the kind of number that ages a player before it falls, if it falls at all.

Either way, Hutson has the puck-moving profile and the assist rate to make this interesting fast, and the league should probably start paying attention now.
