Elliotte Friedman might actually be ready to walk away from Sportsnet this time.
That's the latest read making the rounds this week, and it's a shift from where the conversation stood just days ago.
Earlier in the week, the expectation was that Friedman would stay put. Now that read is changing fast.
He's already got the fame. He's covered a thousand Stanley Cup runs. Neither of those things is what would pull him anywhere new.
So if it's not fame and it's not experience he's chasing, the pull has to be something else entirely.
A fresh challenge, according to people close to the situation, is exactly what's drawing him toward a decision.
If there's no place like home, Friedman stays at Sportsnet. But the reporting increasingly suggests Amazon has made that a genuinely hard call.
Why Amazon's offer is reportedly serious money
Amazon isn't guessing here either. Prime Video signed a 12-year deal with Rogers, landing exclusive Canadian rights to Wednesday Night Hockey.
That package includes at least 26 national regular-season games starting this season, real live inventory Amazon didn't have a year ago.
Landing Friedman would hand that platform instant credibility, an insider voice built on relationships across the entire league.
That's not something Amazon can manufacture with money alone. It has to be bought, or built over years Amazon doesn't have.

Sportsnet, meanwhile, is already down Kelly Hrudey, and Kevin Bieksa remains without a new deal of his own heading into the season.
Losing Friedman on top of that wouldn't just be losing one voice. It would be Sportsnet losing its most recognizable insider entirely.
Nothing is signed anywhere yet. This is still read and speculation, not confirmation from either side of the negotiation.
But the tone of the reporting has clearly shifted, from expecting Friedman to stay toward genuinely wondering if he leaves.
Is a helluva offer from Amazon actually enough to pull him away from the brand he built his entire career around?
That's the question hanging over Canadian hockey broadcasting right now, and it may not stay unanswered much longer.
