Atlanta's NHL push has no player or head coach yet, but the South Forsyth project just moved from speculation to construction.
The development group behind The Gathering at South Forsyth told nearby residents it has secured financing for an NHL franchise and submitted a final approval packet.
More importantly, the first phase of construction reportedly began on September 1, 2026. A local contractor is now grading and leveling the site in Forsyth County, Georgia.
That work is scheduled to continue through January 31, 2027. Once the site preparation is finished, construction on the proposed arena and surrounding buildings is expected to follow.
"BREAKING: In an email released to a nearby community, the development team behind The Gathering at South Forsyth revealed they have secured financing for an NHL team and submitted a final packet for approval.
Developers also revealed that the first phase of construction is underway as of September 1st, 2026. A local contractor will grade and level the site through January 31st, 2027. Construction on the arena and adjacent buildings will start once leveling of the site is complete and will take an estimated 27 months. The entire site will be phased out over 7-10 years.
Based on an estimated completion of May 1st, 2029, a team could potentially be ready to play in the 2029/30 season. One important thing of note here is that according to an MOU with Forsyth County, an arena could not be built in phase one without NHL approval. While it has not been confirmed by the league that a team is being awarded, this is the most concrete information we've seen thus far."
The arena phase carries an estimated 27-month construction timeline. That puts a possible completion around May 2029 if the project stays on its current schedule.
That timing immediately raises the bigger hockey question. An arena completed in 2029 could theoretically put Atlanta in position for an NHL team as early as the 2029-30 season.
There's still a major line separating construction progress from an NHL expansion announcement. The league has not publicly confirmed that Atlanta has been awarded a franchise.

One part of the agreement with Forsyth County adds real weight to the development. The proposed arena could not be included in the first construction phase without NHL approval.
That doesn't mean an expansion team has been approved. But arena construction moving ahead creates a much different situation than another round of renderings, rumors or expressions of interest.
The larger Gathering development is expected to be completed in phases over 7 to 10 years, turning the site into far more than a standalone hockey building.
Atlanta has already had 2 NHL franchises, and another return would give the market a third shot at establishing a long-term team.
For now, the biggest missing piece remains official league confirmation. Until that arrives, there's no franchise, roster or puck-drop date to circle.
But construction changes the conversation. Atlanta's NHL pursuit now has equipment on the ground, a proposed arena timeline and a project moving forward while the hockey world waits for the league's next move.
