Brad Marchand took a public swipe at Tim Stützle as Travis Green weighs Ottawa's next captain.

The Senators haven't opened their season, yet their captaincy decision is already drawing attention from outside the locker room.

Marchand jumped into the conversation on Instagram after a post listed Stützle among Ottawa's leading candidates for the vacant captaincy.

His reaction was short and unmistakably dismissive, laughing at the idea of Stützle wearing the “C.” He offered no explanation behind the jab.

That makes the timing interesting. Ottawa is entering a new leadership chapter after Brady Tkachuk's departure, leaving Green and the organization with a major decision before puck drop.

Stützle is reportedly in the mix alongside Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot. Each option would send a different message about where Ottawa wants its leadership group headed next.

Marchand puts extra heat on Ottawa's decision

Marchand's comment won't decide anything inside Ottawa's room. But it instantly adds another layer of pressure to a captaincy debate that was already going to attract plenty of attention.

Stützle, 24, has become one of Ottawa's most important forwards and wore an alternate captain's “A” at points last season. His case is built around responsibility, offensive weight and a growing role.

Sanderson presents another strong option from the blue line. Chabot brings seniority and years of experience inside the Senators organization.

Marchand also has a direct connection to the situation. He now shares the Florida Panthers locker room with Tkachuk, adding more bite to a comment aimed at one of Ottawa's possible replacements.

This is classic Marchand territory. He doesn't need a long statement to get under an opponent's skin, and one social-media reaction was enough to push Ottawa's captaincy race into a wider NHL conversation.

For Green, the outside noise changes nothing. Ottawa still needs to choose the player who can handle the room, the pressure and the responsibility that comes with leading the Senators.

But if Stützle gets the “C,” Marchand has already given their next meeting a little extra edge.
