Connor Hellebuyck's future with the Winnipeg Jets is under the microscope again, and it has nothing to do with his glove hand.
On Monday's episode of The Sheet, Jeff Marek and David Pagnotta dug into a theory that's been circulating around Hellebuyck's camp for years.
Marek didn't dance around it. He said this type of arrangement has happened around the league before, sign the deal, and if it turns into a losing situation, the team tries to get you out.
Then he stopped short. Marek admitted he didn't know for certain that any such agreement existed between Hellebuyck and the Jets.
Pagnotta didn't hesitate. I believe it did, he said.
The theory traces back to Hellebuyck's 2023 extension. The idea is that Winnipeg and its franchise goaltender had an understanding that if the team fell out of contention, they'd work to send him to a winning team.
It's the kind of arrangement more common in a locker room whisper than a signed document, a handshake nobody puts on paper but everyone remembers when it matters.
What the numbers say about Winnipeg's fading window
The record backs up why that conversation exists at all. Winnipeg finished 35-35-12 this season, good for 82 points and 26th overall in the league.
The Jets closed on a four-game losing streak, dropping their final outing 1-6 against San Jose. Their last 10 games went 5-5-0 under head coach Scott Arniel.
Hellebuyck's own numbers held steady through the collapse around him. He posted a .895 save percentage across 57 appearances, going 18-23-8 behind a Winnipeg defense that leaked 260 goals.
He's still carrying an $8,500,000 cap hit, still the guy Winnipeg built its crease around. If that promise from 2023 is real, the front office has a serious problem on its hands.
You don't get to have your franchise goaltender anchoring a sinking roster while ownership quietly plans his exit route. Eventually, somebody has to make that call public.
Marek was careful not to confirm anything specific to Hellebuyck. Pagnotta was not nearly as careful.
Nothing about Winnipeg's offseason plans has been made official. But the question is out there now, and it's not going away quietly.
