Erik Karlsson's name is back in Toronto Maple Leafs trade rumors, and this one has real legs behind it heading into the 2026-27 season.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman dropped the prediction on the 32 Thoughts podcast this week, pointing to a Karlsson to Toronto move.
Karlsson is entering the final year of his deal in Pittsburgh, carrying an $11,500,000 cap hit, the highest of any defenseman in the league.
He's coming off a 66 point season with the Penguins, 15 goals and 51 assists across 75 games, plus three points in six playoff games.
But here's the problem. Toronto's blue line already has its right-handed answer in Chris Tanev, and just added another in offseason pickup Darren Raddysh.
Tanev appeared in 11 games last season and still posted a plus-8 rating. Raddysh put up 70 points on a $975,000 cap hit, an absolute bargain.
Squeezing Karlsson in means someone gets bumped down the depth chart, and Tanev is not sliding into a third pairing role for a rental defenseman.
Why a Morgan Rielly trade changes everything
There's one door that opens this whole scenario. Move Morgan Rielly, and the math actually starts working for John Chayka.
Rielly carries a $7,500,000 cap hit and posted 36 points in 78 games last season, a rough minus-18 year by his standards.
Trade him, clear out more money if needed, and Toronto suddenly has real runway to chase a rental like Karlsson.
That's the hockey equivalent of needing to sell your old car before the new one shows up in the driveway.
That's a lot of ifs stacked on top of each other. Would Chayka really shake up his blue line to rent a 36 year old for one season?
Toronto already handled Pittsburgh with ease this year, sweeping the season series 3-0, including a 7-2 win on the road.
The Maple Leafs finished 32-36-14 with a minus-46 goal differential, a number that says the issue isn't offense. It's what happens in their own zone.
Karlsson doesn't fix that. He's a puck mover, not a shutdown presence, and Toronto's real hole is structure, not another trigger man on the power play.
Paying a first round pick or a top prospect for one season of a 36 year old rental would be a bad process move, whatever the name value says.
