Quinn Hughes and John Hynes are approaching camp with Minnesota's biggest contract question still unresolved.
Elliotte Friedman still isn't sounding the alarm, but he has now identified a point where his concern would change significantly: the start of the regular season.
Friedman admitted he expected the extension to be finished already. That surprise matters because Minnesota acquired Hughes believing there was a path toward keeping him beyond the current arrangement.
The Wild paid heavily to bring Hughes into the organization, so this isn't a situation where Bill Guerin can comfortably let uncertainty hang around indefinitely.
Friedman's prediction has been a 3-year contract at $18,000,000 per season, creating a $54,000,000 commitment while still giving Hughes relatively short-term flexibility.
That number could become even more difficult for Minnesota as major contracts signed around the league continue pushing expectations higher.
For now, there is no report that Hughes has rejected the Wild or that negotiations have collapsed. The concern comes from how long something expected to happen has remained unfinished.

Training camp would bring Hughes back into the daily rhythm of the team while questions about his future follow every media session and every conversation around the blue line.
Hynes would much rather enter the season discussing Hughes' deployment than explaining why Minnesota's most important contract negotiation is still sitting open.
Guerin also has to balance patience against leverage. Rushing because of outside pressure could produce a contract structure Minnesota doesn't love, while waiting too long can invite more uncertainty.
Friedman's warning provides a clean dividing line. August silence is uncomfortable, but an unsigned Hughes once meaningful games begin would suggest something more complicated is blocking an agreement.
That's when every alternative would start receiving more attention, regardless of whether Minnesota actually wants to consider one.
The Wild still have time to make this disappear before puck drop. But the longer Hughes remains unsigned, the more a contract that once felt expected begins to look like Minnesota's defining preseason issue.
