Zdeno Chara is bringing the band back together, and this time it's happening halfway across the world in his own hometown.
On Friday, August 21st, 21 past and present Boston Bruins will gather at the Pavol Demitra Ice Hockey Stadium in Trencin, Slovakia, for "Zee's Final Shift," a farewell game honoring the longtime captain and Hall of Famer.
The format mirrors Marian Hossa's own farewell game back in 2023, held at that same arena. Chara actually played in that one, and now three years later, he's the one being honored, with Hossa returning the favor by suiting up for Team World.
Puck drop is set for 12:00 PM ET, and the game will air in Slovakia on JOJ Sport, with behind-the-scenes content also planned on the event's Instagram account.
Patrice Bergeron was the first name announced alongside Chara, fitting given the two spent 14 seasons together as the backbone of Boston's leadership core, culminating in the 2011 Stanley Cup win.
Bergeron and Chara are two of 13 members of that 2011 championship team making the trip, including all six defensemen who dressed during that Cup Final.
Pastrnak remains the lone active NHLer in the game
Chara and Tomas Kaberle will actually suit up for Team World, while the other four blueliners from that 2011 group join Ray Bourque on Team Boston's own defense.
Current head coach Marco Sturm is lacing up the skates himself, alongside assistant coach Chris Kelly and development director Adam McQuaid.
Chara's agent, Matt Keator, will stand behind the bench, working alongside 2011 Conn Smythe winner Tim Thomas.
David Pastrnak was originally slated as one of two active NHLers taking part, alongside Brad Marchand, but Marchand withdrew following recent surgery. Jozef Stumpel is stepping in as his replacement.
Pastrnak posted 29 goals and 71 assists for 100 points in 77 games last season, still very much in his prime, making his participation a real treat for fans given how few current NHLers typically take part in games like this.
On the other side, former Bruins Jaromir Jagr, Miroslav Satan, and Aaron Ward will all suit up for Team World, alongside Czech and Slovak legends including Robert Reichel and Zigmund Palffy, both of whom played alongside Chara during his first two NHL seasons back in 1997-98 and 1998-99.
Former Premier League goalkeeper Petr Cech will man the crease for Team World, a genuinely unusual crossover appearance for a farewell tribute like this.
Blackhawks legend Duncan Keith was also announced for Team World, though his name hasn't yet appeared on either official roster posted by the event.
For a player who spent parts of two decades anchoring Boston's blue line, this send-off in his own hometown feels like a fitting way to close the book on a genuinely legendary career.
