Major offensive reinforcement could be on the way for Martin St-Louis and the Canadiens

Alexander Zharovsky has given Martin St-Louis an encouraging development as the Canadiens prospect opens camp in a premium KHL spot.

The 19-year-old is back in Russia with Salavat Yulaev Ufa after spending a significant portion of his summer in Montreal.

Early camp sessions have placed Zharovsky on a line with Vadim Shipachev and Yegor Suchkov, giving the young forward an intriguing opportunity before preseason games begin.

Shipachev brings an extraordinary résumé to that combination. He has recorded 892 points across 954 KHL games, making him the league's all-time leading scorer.

For Zharovsky, the value goes beyond sharing shifts with a productive veteran. He gets to watch how an experienced centre reads space, handles possession and creates offense at the professional level.

The Canadiens prospect now has to show he can hold that assignment. Training-camp lines can change quickly, and his next test will come when Ufa moves from practices into exhibition games.

Montreal already has plenty of reason to monitor him closely. Zharovsky was ranked 33rd among drafted NHL prospects in Scott Wheeler's recent top-100 list, putting him among the organization's more highly regarded young players.

Playing beside Shipachev could accelerate parts of his offensive development that are difficult to replicate away from meaningful competition.

There is also a clear path for Zharovsky to raise expectations this season. More consistent production and stronger professional deployment would give the Canadiens a better picture of how quickly he could approach an NHL opportunity.

Kent Hughes doesn't need to rush that process. Montreal's general manager can allow Zharovsky to develop in Russia while watching whether his role expands as the season moves along.

The current line assignment is still only an early camp development, not a guarantee that Zharovsky will spend the year beside Shipachev.

But it is exactly the type of opportunity Montreal would want for a 19-year-old prospect. Quality linemates can demand faster decisions and reward players who find open ice.

Preseason games should reveal whether Ufa's coaching staff intends to keep the combination together. If Zharovsky holds his spot, his season could begin with far more responsibility than Canadiens fans expected.

For now, Montreal can take the early news as a win. Zharovsky returned to Russia looking to keep progressing, and his first assignment has put him beside one of the KHL's most accomplished offensive players.
