Kashawn Aitcheson and head coach Peter DeBoer now have a major new development option to track across the NHL.
Starting in 2026-27, eligible 19-year-old prospects drafted from the Canadian Hockey League can be assigned to the American Hockey League.
That removes a barrier that has shaped roster decisions for decades. Previously, CHL prospects who weren't ready for NHL minutes generally had to return to junior hockey.
The old setup often left teams without a true middle ground. A prospect could dominate against younger competition but still require time before handling an NHL forecheck, schedule and defensive workload.
That forced difficult calls during training camp. Clubs either kept a teenager in the NHL, where mistakes could become costly, or sent him back to a level he may have already outgrown.
The updated agreement gives development staffs another option. A 19-year-old can now work against professionals, learn an NHL system and receive more controlled deployment without occupying a big-league roster spot.
NHL teams gain more control over development
There are limits attached to the change. Each NHL organization can reportedly place only 1 eligible CHL prospect in the AHL at a time.
The assignment must also be considered beneficial for the player. Teams won't have unlimited freedom to move every top junior prospect into their farm system.
Players can return to the CHL during the season, preserving an exit route when AHL minutes disappear or the professional adjustment proves too steep.
The rule does not extend to 18-year-olds. Those players must still earn an NHL job, return to junior hockey or continue through another eligible development path.
For coaches and front offices, the biggest change is flexibility. They can evaluate a young player against professionals without deciding that he must immediately survive NHL matchups and pressure.
The CHL could feel the impact quickly. Elite teenagers sell tickets, drive local interest and often carry major roles on the power play, penalty kill and top line.
Losing even 1 prominent player can alter a junior team's season. But NHL clubs will prioritize development, especially when returning a prospect to junior offers limited competition.
The first assignments under the rule will draw heavy attention. Those decisions could influence how teams handle top prospects for years and reshape the bridge between junior hockey and the NHL.
