Dawson Abrahams is being mourned by his family, teammates and coaches after the 22-year-old died unexpectedly last week.
Abrahams, from St. Catharines, Ontario, passed away peacefully in his sleep. No further details about the cause have been publicly provided.
He was studying Physical Education at Redeemer University while playing for the Royals men's hockey team.
Abrahams made an immediate impact in his latest season, recording 10 goals and 27 points across 18 games.
He also served as an assistant captain and earned Redeemer's Men's Hockey Rookie of the Year award.
Those achievements tell only part of his story. Tributes have focused on his leadership, humility, sportsmanship and the support he gave people away from the rink.

His hockey path included time with the St. Catharines Falcons, Niagara North Stars, Southern Tier Admirals, Welland Jr. Canadians and Pelham Panthers.
Each stop added to the wide group now grieving his loss. Former teammates, coaches and members of Ontario's hockey community have shared messages of shock and sadness.
Faith was also central to Abrahams' life. He spent time at Portantorchas in Costa Rica, led Bible studies and worked during the summer at Camp Crossroads.
His family said Camp Crossroads held deep meaning for him. He was spending his final days there, surrounded by a community and purpose he valued.
Abrahams is survived by his parents, Derek and Sue, his sister Rachel, brother-in-law Brandon Fehderau and nephew Walter. He was predeceased by his sister Brooke.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 31, at Central Community in Niagara-on-the-Lake. A service celebrating his life will follow there on Saturday, August 1.
The family has asked that memorial contributions be directed to Camp Crossroads in his honour. Abrahams leaves behind more than a strong season or an award; he leaves a community remembering how he treated people.
