Connor McDavid admitted the Darnell Nurse trade hurt, while head coach Mike Babcock prepares Edmonton for a new-look season.
The Oilers captain said he was “extremely disappointed” to lose Nurse, one of the longest-serving and most important members of Edmonton's locker room.
McDavid's reaction was personal, not political. Nurse had been part of the core for years, sharing playoff pressure, long road trips and back-to-back Stanley Cup Final runs.
That history made the trade difficult to absorb. Moving a major voice from the room always creates an adjustment, especially when the player was close to the captain.
McDavid didn't turn the moment into public criticism of management. He also praised Edmonton's new additions and acknowledged the opportunity created by the offseason changes.
That balance matters. The captain clearly disliked losing Nurse, but he isn't resisting the reset Babcock and the front office are trying to build.

The Oilers moved Nurse to San Jose and brought Shakir Mukhamadullin into the organization, changing the makeup of a blue line that had stayed largely familiar.
Ryan Shea also joined the defense, giving Babcock another option as he sorts through pairings, special-teams assignments and difficult matchup minutes.
Edmonton made major changes in the crease as well. Frederik Andersen and Devon Levi joined Tristan Jarry, creating real competition before training camp.
McDavid praised the added depth and stressed the value of having several goalies ready. That support gives Babcock room to let performance determine the opening-night order.
The larger message was clear: McDavid can miss Nurse while still believing the Oilers improved. Those positions aren't in conflict when a contender is chasing a better result.
Edmonton's leaders know the clock is moving. The roster has changed, the coach has changed and another short playoff run would place even more heat on everyone involved.
McDavid didn't hide the emotional cost of the trade. But he also made it clear that the new group has his attention, and that gives Babcock an important vote of confidence before camp opens.
