Jakub Dobes just gave Martin St-Louis a clear crease piece for Montreal's next wave.
The Canadiens moved fast and got it done, agreeing to a 3-year extension with Dobes that runs from 2027-28 through 2029-30. That is the headline, and it is a strong one for Montreal.
This is not a token reward for a backup who had a nice stretch. Dobes forced his way into the long-term conversation the second he showed he could handle NHL pressure.
He led all rookie goalies with 29 wins in 2025-26, and that alone explains why Kent Hughes did not want this file sitting around too long.
Dobes also finished the year with a 29-10-4 record in 43 games. Those are not soft numbers for a young goalie learning on the fly in a market like Montreal.
And there was real noise inside those results. He opened the season 6-0-0 with a 1.97 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage, which made everyone in the organization pay attention fast.
The playoff moment mattered too. Dobes made 28 saves in a 2-1 Game 7 win over Tampa Bay and became only the fifth goalie in franchise history to win a Game 7.
" Jakub Dobes has signed a three-year extension with #GoHabsGo north of $16 million. AAV is $5,357,575. "

The Canadiens just confirmed another major contract extension
That is the strongest angle here. The Canadiens did not wait for more noise, more leverage, or one more breakout to raise the price. They moved now because they already know Dobes is part of the structure.
It also fits the bigger roster picture. Samuel Montembeault is still in place, Jacob Fowler is in the system, and now Dobes is locked in beyond his current deal. Montreal suddenly has real depth in net.
That gives St-Louis flexibility. He does not need Dobes to become the automatic No. 1 tomorrow, but he does have another goalie the staff can trust as the team keeps pushing forward.
The All-Rookie Team nod only adds to the case. Dobes was recognized league-wide after a season that made him more than a nice surprise story.
And that is why this extension feels important right away. Montreal did not just keep a young goalie. It secured one of the clearest success stories from its 2025-26 season before the price of belief got any higher.
Did the Canadiens make the right call by extending Jakub Dobes now?
