The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Nick Paul from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday, sending goaltender Dennis Hildeby back the other way.

Paul, 31, carries a $3.15 million cap hit with five years left on his deal through 2028-29 free agency.

He put up 7 goals and 8 assists for 15 points in 51 games this season, with a minus-15 rating.

His production dried up in the playoffs. Zero points in six games, a minus-2 mark to go with it.

Toronto also sent a 2028 third-round pick and a 2027 fourth-rounder to Tampa Bay in the deal.

The Lightning get Hildeby, 24, a restricted free agent who posted 3 wins in 20 appearances with a .912 save percentage this season.

Toronto adds a net $2.31 million in cap hit with this move, according to PuckPedia's trade breakdown.

Why Toronto needed grit after a brutal finish

Context matters here. The Maple Leafs closed the year on a seven-game losing streak, going 2-7-1 over their final 10.

That's a team that finished 28th overall with a minus-46 goal differential. Paul isn't walking into a contender's middle six.

He's walking into a rebuild in progress, whether Toronto wants to call it that or not.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, finished fifth overall at 50-26-6 with a plus-59 differential. The Lightning beat Toronto twice in three meetings this season, outscoring them 9-4 in those two wins.

Trading a depth forward with fading offensive numbers for a young goalie on an entry-level bridge deal and two mid-round picks is a curious return for a team that just went to the playoffs.

Paul brings size and penalty-kill experience, sure. But paying $3.15 million for a guy who went pointless through a full playoff run is a tough sell on a team already bleeding games.

Hildeby gives Tampa Bay organizational goaltending depth behind Andrei Vasilevskiy, a player still just 24 with time to develop.

For Toronto, the math on this trade won't make sense until we see who's actually running that locker room next season. Right now, all Leafs fans have is a name, a cap number, and a lot of unanswered questions.
