Sergei Bobrovsky and Paul Maurice just hit the biggest Panthers question of the summer.

Bobrovsky is officially headed to free agency, and that changes the goalie market right away. A veteran with his résumé does not come loose very often.

He is 37, but this is still a big name. Bobrovsky finished 2025-26 with 52 games played, 27 wins, a 3.07 goals-against average, and an .877 save percentage.

The money side matters too. His 7-year deal at a $10,000,000 cap hit just ran out, so the next contract becomes a short-term bet, not a franchise marriage.

That is why Florida still makes sense. Even with the numbers dipping, the Panthers know the player, know the room fit, and know exactly how much calm he can bring to a contender.

Carolina belongs in the conversation for a reason as well. The Hurricanes already had goalie questions deep into June, and Bobrovsky was linked to them before the deadline.

Bobrovsky free agency bombshell changes everything for Florida this summer

New Jersey is the cleanest hockey fit on paper. Sheldon Keefe has a talented roster, but the Devils still need more certainty in net if they want to push back into the top tier.

The Oilers are easy to connect too. Edmonton never escapes goalie talk for long, and adding a proven veteran would instantly become one of the biggest moves of Stan Bowman's summer.

The hard part in Edmonton is cost. If Bobrovsky really wants around 2 years and $10,000,000 per season, that is a massive swing for a team already juggling pressure all over the roster.

Vegas is another real possibility. The Golden Knights always think big, and after a Cup Final loss, it would surprise nobody if they looked hard at another major crease move.

That said, Florida still feels like the team to beat. Bobrovsky may want the East, and staying with the Panthers gives him the most familiar path without forcing a total reset this late in his career.

The Flyers are the kind of outside team to watch in an “other” lane. They are not the first club people mention, but a team trying to speed up its climb could talk itself into a short veteran swing.

This market is going to come down to comfort, money, and urgency. The Panthers can offer comfort. Carolina and New Jersey can offer East fits. Edmonton and Vegas can offer big-stage pressure and big expectations.

For now, the smartest bet is still Florida. But Sergei Bobrovsky is loose, the goalie carousel just got more interesting, and there are enough believable teams here to make this one move fast.
